Our Amish desk category will be one of our fastest growing categories since it is our goal to offer one of the internet's largest selection of Amish made desks from a variety of the top Amish desk builders in the country. Our solid wood desks are made to order in a variety of popular domestic wood types including oak, cherry, maple, brown maple, white oak, hickory, and walnut. Every solid wood desk at Amish Furniture Factory, from our mission style desks to our rustic styles, is handcrafted using old world building techniques that have been handed down to each new generation within the Amish furniture crafting trade. One such old work building technique is the Mortise and Tenon Joint.

The Mortise and Tenon joint is a simple and strong joint used in high quality hand crafted furniture pieces, such as our solid wood desks. There are many variations of the joint, but the basic joint structure consists of two wood pieces that are joined by one piece fitting into another. One piece has a hole cut into it that the other piece, called the tenon fits into. The joint may then be pinned, wedged and locked into place, glued, or a combination of the three.

What Makes an Amish Desk Unique?

What’s unique about Amish furniture builders is their tendency to blend old work craftsmanship and building techniques with new equipment and technology. During the construction of an Amish desk, many types of equipment will be used that is commercially available. The tools include both stationary machines such as band saws, mortisers, table saws, jointers, and wood lathes. An Amish desk will be made by typical industrial grade hand held tools that are commercially available. These tools may include electric drills, jig saws, or routers.

During the construction of an Amish desk, for example, these “power” tools will not be powered from an electric power grid feeding an alternating current electric charge. Instead, an Amish desk builder will swap out electric motors and install a hydraulic pump or belt drive system powered by a diesel engine.

How to Choose the Right Size and Configuration? Maximize Your Workspace

Choosing the right size and setup for your Amish desk is key to creating a comfortable, efficient workspace. From desk height and width to drawer layout, every detail plays a role in how well your desk supports your daily tasks.

Popular Types of Amish Desk

Executive Desks
Large and commanding, executive desks are designed for spacious home offices or professional settings. They often feature built-in storage, drawers, and solid wood tops, making them ideal for those who need both workspace and organization.

Writing Desks
Simple and streamlined, writing desks offer a minimalist design with a flat surface and minimal storage. They’re perfect for students, writers, or anyone working in a smaller space who values clean design and functionality.

Adjustable Height Desks
Blending traditional craftsmanship with modern needs, these desks allow users to switch between sitting and standing. Ideal for those who prioritize ergonomics without sacrificing the solid wood quality Amish furniture is known for.

L-Shaped Desks
Designed for efficiency and corner placement, L-shaped desks provide ample workspace and storage. Great for multitaskers or anyone setting up a home office with multiple monitors or devices.

Rolltop Desks
A classic design that features a sliding tambour cover to conceal the workspace. Rolltop desks are great for traditional interiors and users who want to keep their work area tidy and enclosed when not in use.

Desks with Hutches
These desks include overhead shelving or cabinets, offering extra storage without taking up additional floor space. Ideal for organizing books, files, or decorative items in home offices or study areas.

Computer Desks
Designed with modern tech use in mind, computer desks often include keyboard trays, cord management, and space for CPUs or printers. Best for users who work with desktop computers or need a more tech-friendly setup.

Customizing Your Amish Desk

Customizing an Amish desk means you’re getting exactly what fits your style and needs. You can choose from solid hardwoods like cherry, oak, maple, or walnut—each with its own look and feel. Cherry deepens in color over time for a warm, rich tone. Oak is durable with a strong grain, maple offers a smooth, lighter finish, and walnut gives you a bold, dark elegance. Stain colors, finishes like varnish or lacquer, and even distressing techniques can all be tailored to match your space—whether you want something sleek or more rustic.

You can also add practical features like hutches for extra storage, file drawers to keep things organized, and keyboard pull-outs for a cleaner setup. Sizes are customizable too, so whether you need a compact writing desk or a full L-shaped or U-shaped workstation, there’s flexibility to make it work for your home or office.

Why Buy Your Amish Desk from Us?

When you buy from us, you get a desk that is truly handcrafted—built by expert Amish artisans utilizing time-honored joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon and dovetail. There is no mass production or particle board—only genuine oak, painstakingly picked and molded to last for generations.

You also have complete control over the design. Whether it's an oak executive desk, a cherry writing desk, or a custom piece with file drawers and a keyboard tray, pick the wood, stain, size, hardware, and arrangement to fit your demands and available space. Everything is created in the USA using sustainably obtained resources, which helps to support small, family-run Amish workshops and preserves traditional American workmanship.

Testimonials
  • “I ordered my furniture in ‘Walnut’ wood which while may seem rare for US, it’s a wood that I’m very familiar with and I really love. The bookcase I received is an absolutely beautiful piece of craftsmanship, and I’m really happy to own a beautiful handmade Amish furniture in my house. My bookcase is just like the picture when I was ordering, and is even more beautiful than I imagined. Delivery of my bookcase was delayed a bit, but it was worth the wait. I loved it so much, that I ordered another one exactly like it. ”

  • “I am very pleased with the Amish Factory Furniture dining set and buffet. The quality and craftsmanship are beautiful and really complement my new home. My son-in-law, who does woodworking as a hobby, was truly impressed with the handcrafted woodwork. I am grateful for the very positive experience and the professional delivery and setup worker who drove cross-country to Southern California for my order." - Marylou from California

Frequently Asked Questions

An Amish desk is made from solid hardwood—no particle board or cheap fillers. The most common woods used are American hardwoods like oak, cherry, maple, hickory, and walnut. These are chosen because they’re strong, long-lasting, and hold up well to everyday use.
To care for your Amish desk, dust regularly with a soft cloth and clean with a mild, non-abrasive wood cleaner. Avoid direct sunlight and extreme humidity to preserve the wood’s finish and prevent warping or cracking.
Amish desks are typically made from high-quality hardwoods like oak (both red and white), maple, cherry, walnut, and hickory. You can also find desks made from less common woods like mahogany, elm, pine, or cedar. The wood you choose will impact the desk’s look, durability, and overall style.
Building a custom Amish desk usually takes around 6 to 12 weeks, depending on the complexity of the design and current demand. Since each desk is handcrafted to your specifications, it requires time for careful construction and finishing.
Yes, Amish desks are eco-friendly. They’re made from solid wood, often sourced sustainably from local hardwoods, and crafted by hand without synthetic materials or heavy machinery. This makes them a more environmentally conscious choice.
