There are several variants and close relatives of dressers, such as chests of drawers, chests on chests, and door chests.

However, the distinguishing characteristics of dressers which technically separates them from other dresser variants or other types of chests, is an ideal height that allows for the mounting and use of a mirror on the back edge. The other key characteristic of dressers is they are typically wider or square in shape rather than taller and less wide. This process does not mean Amish dressers or other types of Amish made furniture are mass produced, it simply means a process and system and been fully developed to accurately reproduce more than one piece of the same dresser, using templates, jigs, bits, blades, and other tools.
